Accessibility

At Hachette UK we are committed to making our content as accessible as possible for all readers, including those with disabilities and neurodiversities.

We adhere to The Copyright and Rights in Performances (Disability) Regulations 2014 (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukdsi /2014/9780111112694) and the Marrakesh Treaty, ratified in 2018 (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/changes-to-copyright-law-to-implement-the-marrakesh-directive/changes-to-copyright-law-to-implement-the-marrakesh-directive).

In 2019, Hachette also signed the Charter for Accessible Publishing (ABC Charter) (https://www.accessiblebooksconsortium.org/portal/en/charter.html), which promotes the production of eBooks and other digital publications in accessible formats.

Hachette is in partnership with the RNIB (Royal National Institute for Blind People) to make all books available via their Bookshare platform. Bookshare is an online library of digital books for people with qualifying print disabilities. Please visit Bookshare for further information (https://www.rnibbookshare.org/cms/).

In 2020, Jessica Kingsley Publishers released the first guidelines for producing dyslexia-friendly texts and workplaces in the industry. Written in association with Hachette UK’s Accessibility Network and in consultation with the British Dyslexia Association (BDA), the guide outlines changes that can be implemented by publishers to make books and the workplace accessible for those with learning difficulties.

At Hachette, we continue to develop our digital formats to ensure they include features that help those with disabilities to access their content. We have over 47,000 titles available in ePub format, 3,000 in PDF and over 9,000 MP3 audio editions. We are working with charities and suppliers to improve navigation and searchability in our files as well as producing titles with image descriptions. All new eBook editions are now published in ePub3 format.
